About Netscape Profiles

Profiles are used in Netscape Communicator to permit multiple users on a single workstation. Individual preferences and settings are stored in a profile. These settings include bookmarks and digital certificate information. Multiple profiles allow each user of the workstation to have an individual certificate database with a unique password.

Generally, when Netscape is first used, a default profile is created. If there is only one user on the workstation, this default profile is all that is necessary. If there is only one profile, Netscape does not present the "Netscape Communicator Profiles" window at start-up. Once a second profile is added, this window will appear each time Netscape is launched.

Creating a New Profile

1. Select "Start" from the taskbar, and then "Programs" - "Netscape" - "Utilities" - "User Profile Manager".
2. Click the "New" button.
3. You will see a window describing profiles, click the "Next" button.
4. Enter your full name and e-mail address in the fields provided.
5. Click the "Next" button.
6. Enter a profile name.
7. Verify the directory where the profile will be stored.

NOTE: Each profile must have a different name and location. This name is only stored on the workstation where the profile is created. If you select the same directory as an existing profile, Netscape may overwrite the older profile.

8. Click the "Next" button.
9. If you will not be using Netscape Messenger as your e-mail client, leave the Outgoing Mail Server field blank and click the "Finish" button.

The following steps are only required if you will be using Netscape Messenger as your e-mail client. You will need your mail server information from your mail administrator to complete the remaining fields. You can also choose to finish the profile at this time and return later under the "Edit" - "Preferences" menu to set up your mail server.

1. Enter your Outgoing Mail Server name.
2. Click the "Next" button.
3. Enter your mail username.
4. Enter your Incoming Mail Server name.
5. Select the radio button for your mail server type (POP3 or IMAP).
6. Click the "Finish" button.

Deleting a Profile

If you will no longer be accessing the workstation, you should delete both your profile and the files associated with this profile.

NOTE: Deleting these files will delete any private keys associated with the profile. Be sure you have an exported copy of your certificate before deleting the profile. There is no way to recover you private key if you delete your only copy of it.

1. Select "Start" from the taskbar, and then "Programs" - "Netscape" - "Utilities" - "User Profile Manager".
2. Select the profile to delete.
3. Click the "Delete..." button.
4. Click the "Delete Files" button.
